A TERRIER ON THE EDGE

Chipie was founded by Jean-Michel Signoles, only aged 17 years, on 16th December, 1967, in Carcassonne in the south of France, right next to its famous medieval walled city. At first he customized vintage second-hand clothes imported from the USA before opening 4 years later his first production factory. As early as the 70s, the brand took on its strong identity as a national leader in denims. Chipie quickly displayed skills – still with it today – of creating detail and labels that made it a trendsetter in jeans, going way beyond identity of a brand and using labels to develop a garment’s style or underlying theme, giving each garment its own image. This is what made Chipie articles with labels sewn on the outside so fantastically successful. Labels came out of hiding and, pioneered by Chipie, became image-makers recognized by the consumer. The brand was already well-established in French adults’ wear when Chipie junior was launched in 1979.

Chipie junior’s own long story is inspired by American campus and student lifestyles. It has had a playful personality for the outset, with its signature terrier logo, badges and colours which assured it of its own place in the jeans sector. Collections are designed these days only for girls… in babies’ sizes from 3 months – charming and soft, to children’s sizes with a determinedly amusing kids’ identity, and teens up to 18 years – edgy, mischievous and suggestive of high fashion, making for an almost seamless (can we use the word ?) transition into the young women’s wear range.
